Hornets Extra: L.A. Clippers 113, Hornets 92

113

92

Another game, another loss, as the Charlotte Hornets saw their losing streak reach 6 games, as they are now 4-11 on the year after the Los Angeles Clippers demolished Charlotte last night at Time Warner Cable Arena by a final margin of 113-92.

Leading the way for the Clippers in the win were co-captains Blake Griffin and Chris Paul, who each had 22 points to lead the way for the Clippers, who improved to 8-5 on the season.  Joining the two were Jamal Crawford, who had 21 points off the bench for the Clippers, while former Duke standout J.J. Redick added in 17 points to the effort.

Teamwise, Los Angeles finished the game shooting 51.1% from the field, while winning the rebounding war by a 43-33 margin.  The Hornets were led in the loss by Cody Zeller off the bench with 17 points.

The Hornets hope to end this long 6-game losing skid tomorrow night as they look for some revenge against Damian Lillard and the Portland Trail Blazers for a 7:00 tip-off at Time Warner Cable Arena, before they break for Thanksgiving and returning to action on Friday night when they welcome in Charlotte native Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors to "The Hive" for a 7:00 p.m. start.

The Charlotte Hornets begin a stretch of 3 home games in 5 days starting tonight, as they look to break their 5-game losing skid taking on the Los Angeles Clippers at Time Warner Cable Arena.  Charlotte is coming off another loss, this time at the hands of the Miami Heat last night in Miami 94-93, while the Clippers are coming off a loss of their own at the hands of the Memphis Grizzlies last night in Memphis by a 107-91 margin.

Scouting the Clippers

The Los Angeles Clippers have been starting to come into their own during the Steve Ballmer era, as they come into tonight's game with a 7-5 mark, and coming off a tough loss to the 12-2 Memphis Grizzlies last night in Memphis.  The big stars for the Clippers are of course, Blake Griffin and North Carolina native and former Wake Forest star Chris Paul, not to mention a supporting cast that makes up the "Lob City Mafia".  Whenever the Clippers come to town, you know a lot of dunks will be taking place each night, and the Clippers hope that CP3 and Blake Griffin can bounce back from last night's loss as they visit Charlotte to face the struggling Hornets.

Scouting the Hornets

The Charlotte Hornets are in a midst of a 5-game losing streak, with the latest coming last night against the Heat in Miami, as the Hornets learned yesterday that they will be without Michael Kidd-Gilchrist until December(foot).  Not only that, the Hornets find themselves sitting in last place in the Southeast Division with a 4-10 mark, amid blowing big leads and not finishing up the game.  Can the Hornets reverse that trend?  We'll have to watch and find out tonight, as the Hornets begin a stretch of 3 games in 5 days with a visit from the Los Angeles Clippers to Time Warner Cable Arena.

30 Teams in 30 Days: Los Angeles Clippers

We continue our "30 Teams in 30 Days" preview series of each of the 30 NBA teams for the 2014-15 season by spending the next 2 days in sunny Los Angeles, where we'll first preview the Los Angeles Clippers, a team that has gone under a major makeover with a new owner that is willing to restore order, and a team that is determined to put controversy behind them.

Last season's record: 57-25(1st in Pacific Division/3rd in Western Conference; Def. GS 4-3 in Western Conference 1st Round; Lost to OKC 4-2 in Western Conference Semi-finals)

Head Coach: Doc Rivers(16th season, 644-498 overall; 57-25 with LAC)

Arena: Staples Center(19,060)

Website: Clippers.com

In their 2013-14 campaign, the Los Angeles Clippers wanted to prove themselves worthy that they can contend in the Western Conference, and in their own division, which is the Pacific Division, and as usual, "Lob City" was in full effect with Blake Griffin and Chris Paul running the show, and that did a lot of work for Los Angeles in the regular season, finishing as Pacific Division Champions with a 57-25 record, and a 3rd place finish in the Western Conference standings.

But a dark cloud was looming over the clouds, as Donald Sterling made some controversial comments that eventually led to his banishment from the NBA forever, but that did not stop the Clippers to roll past their in-state rivals, the Golden State Warriors, led by Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, 4-3, before being eliminated in the Western Conference semi-finals by a tough Oklahoma City Thunder team 4-2.

Then, a major change took place in the ownership department, as former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer stepped in to purchase the franchise, marking what could be the start of a new chapter in the Clippers 30 year history in Los Angeles.

Many are expecting the Clippers to be a strong, but yet, major threat in the league and in the Western Conference this season in Doc Rivers' second year as Clippers head coach, as he is coming off a successful first season guiding them to a 57-25 record, and he totally wants his team to achieve the ultimate goal: an NBA championship.  Watch out folks, the Clippers are indeed a tough team, and they'll prove it to you when the season starts in a couple of weeks from now.

Upcoming team previews in the "30 Teams in 30 Days" series:

  • Saturday: Los Angeles Lakers
  • Sunday: Golden State Warriors
  • Monday: Sacramento Kings
  • Tuesday: Portland Trail Blazers
  • Wednesday: Minnesota Timberwolves
  • Thursday: Memphis Grizzlies
  • Next Friday: Indiana Pacers

Remembering the Charlotte Hornets 25 years later: The First Win

On selected days during this Charlotte Bobcats season, we are continuing our series looking back at some of the key moments during this, the 25th Anniversary of the Charlotte Hornets first season, and in this installment, we'll be talking about the night that the Hornets would finally notch its first win as a franchise, back on Tuesday November 8, 1988.

A young team earns its first win in franchise history

After dropping the first two games of their 1988-89 inaugural season, the Charlotte Hornets were sitting at 0-2 entering that night's home game against the Los Angeles Clippers on November 8, 1988 at the Charlotte Coliseum before a crowd of 18,865, and on the day of the game, Hornets owner George Shinn was addressing the media about a possible name change for the facility, which opened less than 2 months ago back on August 11, 1988, since many of the media members were trying to figure out where in the world was Charlotte located at during the city's quest to bring an NBA team during the mid-1980's. Some thought Charlotte was located in South Carolina, while others thought it was in Virginia, or West Virginia, but we all know that Charlotte is located right here in North Carolina.

It was during that meeting with the local media, that Shinn realized that his left arm was shaking, as Spencer Stolpen, the team's president at the time was checking on Shinn to see if he was okay when he came into the offices at 100 Hive Drive on the day of the game, as Stoplen realized that Shinn wasn't feeling good, and coincidentally, Stolpen had to take Shinn to the hospital, as he did not realize that he had suffered a mild stroke earlier in the day during his briefing about the possible name change for the Charlotte Coliseum, and for many of the fans that were making their way out to the Coliseum for the game that night, they were all indeed worried about the man who made it all happen for Charlotte to get an NBA team and transforming it into a major-league sports city.

As for the game that night against the Clippers at home, it would be played as scheduled, and it would see another first in Charlotte Hornets history, the first-ever Double-Double.  It would be recorded by Kurt Rambis, who would score 17 points on just 7-of-9 shooting from the field, to go along with 14 rebounds, while Kelly Tripucka would lead the way for Charlotte with 24 points, as the Hornets would lead by as many as 14 points in the fourth, but with 1:43 left, the Clippers would go on a run to cut the Hornet lead down to six, and during an 11-5 scoring run to wrap up the game, Robert Reid would score six points down the stretch to lift the Charlotte Hornets to its first ever victory in franchise history, with a 117-105 win over the Clippers at "The Hive", sending the 18,865 fans home happy, which was ironically the smallest crowd of the inaugural campaign for the Hornets, with it being Election Day to go along with it, and the players and coaches were indeed worried about George Shinn after he suffered a mild stroke earlier in the day, so they all got together and signed a basketball and gave it to the Hornets owner in honor of the team's first win in franchise history as they literally won it for George.

The Hornets first win on November 8th, 1988 was another special moment in the history of the Charlotte Hornets during the 1988-89 campaign, as we continue to look back at the team's memorable moments from that first season in honor of the 25th Anniversary of their debut, and looking ahead to the long-awaited return of the Hornets to Charlotte in 2014-15.
